education at sea

  • “Floating Classrooms”

Students engage in hands-on STEM-based learning while exploring the Puget Sound aboard the Doolin-Rogers. Through field-based science and environmental studies, they gain firsthand experience in marine conservation, navigation, and ecosystem management. For the past 10 years, YMF has proudly partnered with Tacoma Public Schools’ Science and Math Institute (SAMI) and Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA) to provide on-the-water educational experiences aboard the Doolin-Rogers. These immersive classes allow students to engage in hands-on STEM learning, marine conservation, navigation, and ecosystem studies while exploring the Puget Sound. SAMI, located in Metro Parks Tacoma, offers an integrated, inquiry-based curriculum that combines science, math, arts, and environmental studies, while SOTA provides rigorous visual and performing arts education that blends artistic development with academic excellence. Through this partnership, YMF continues to expand access to dynamic, real-world learning that connects students to the water in meaningful ways.
